UNK Sports Medicine

About

The UNK Athletic Training room is currently staffed by seven full-time certified athletic trainers and assistants from the Athletic Training graduate program. The staff delivers medical care for over 500 student-athletes in 15 NCAA-sponsored sports. The athletic training room is one of the finest in Division II athletics devoted to the prevention, recognition/evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. In cooperation with the UNK Master of Athletic Training program, the UNK Sports Medicine program is committed to providing student-athletes the highest quality care possible while providing a quality learning environment for athletic training students.

UNK Sports Medicine provides two athletic training rooms to deliver care for student-athletes. The primary facility is located on the lower level of the Health and Sports Center. The facility is designed to accommodate most UNK student-athletes during the year by providing taping, treatment, rehabilitation, and hydrotherapy services. A second satellite facility is located at Foster Field and is primarily used for football and women's soccer.

UNK is also very proud to have Dr. Brad Rodgers as its medical director and primary general medical physician. Dr. Rodgers has served as medical director for over 30 years.  He is a vital member of the UNK sports medicine team.

The UNK sports medicine department partners with New West Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Surgery and New West Sports Orthopaedic & Sports Rehabilitation to provide UNK athletes with the best orthopedic care. Lead orthopedic surgeons Nolan May, MD, and Heber Crockett, MD direct a team of orthopedic surgeons, including Jim Mahalek, MD, Paul Nielsen, MD, and Ryan Deblis, MD, all fellowship trained in sports medicine. These surgeons specialize in Sports medicine, general orthopedics, hip pathology/joint replacement, shoulder pathology, orthopedic trauma, orthopedic spine and neurology, and orthopedic hand pathology.
